Minister Layoun launches 2013 activities of the International Center for Human Sciences in Byblos

The Board of Directors of the International Center for Human Sciences, chaired by the Minister of Culture of Lebanon, Mr. Gaby Layoun, held its first meeting in the conference room of the center in Jbeil, in the presence of Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences at UNESCO, Ms. Pilar Alvarez - Laso, Director General from UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut, Dr. Hamad Bin Saif Al Hammami, the head of the Department of Social and Human Sciences, Ms. Seiko Sugita, the responsible of cultural activities Mr. Joe Kreidi, as well as the Board of Directors’ members, Ms. Asma Khader (former Minister of Culture in Jordan), Mr. Adama Samassekou (former Minister of Education, Mali), Mr. Antony Todorov (consultant of the Bulgarian government), Ms. Rama Mani (expert on post-conflict peace, India), Dr. Nassif Nassar (former Dean of the Faculty of Letters and Social Sciences Institute at the Lebanese University). It should be noted that Dr. Ahmad Beydoun, Council member was absent for health reasons (writer, researcher and professor in Lebanon and France, and winner of the knight medal from the French Academy). The meeting was also attended by the President of the Permanent Mission of Lebanon at UNESCO, Ambassador Dr. Khalil Karam, in addition to Dr. Adonis Al Akra, in charge of the International Center for Human Sciences matters.

In his inaugural speech, the Minister of Culture appealed the persons and employees in charge of the center matters to the necessity of performing their scientific and cultural duties based on the values ​​of freedom, justice and human dignity, in addition to enhancing the chances of peace, especially that the goal for which the center is established is to achieve the objectives of UNESCO in the development of information, to ensure the spiritual and material development in human societies and to support the connections of the international solidarity on intellectual, behavior and ethics level in order to promote the values ​​of tolerance and the right to difference and recognition of the other.

Ms. Pilar Alvarez-Laso thanked in her speech Minister Layoun for his call to convene the Board of Directors in addition to the Lebanese government for its attention and support for the International Center for Human Sciences in Jbeil. She pointed out that this meeting has a symbolic importance due to its push for the center to resume its duties and respond to the major, international and regional challenges, so it becomes launched from this region as a start for the civilized dialogue, scientific research, and cultural activity conforming to the expectations of UNESCO and in order to achieve the objectives of this organization. She mentioned again the objectives of the center as they appeared in the agreement signed between the Lebanese government and UNESCO: "the study of contemporary man in his relationship with nature and society, in addition to a series of questions related to development, dialogue and the culture of peace in the world."

The Board of Directors gathered together on Friday and Saturday on the 8th and 9th of February 2013. Consequently, they put an action plan based on the directives and priorities of UNESCO and the study of the general budget of the center. They also addressed an invitation to the submission of the official nominations in order to take over its management tasks. The announcement of the nominations will take place internationally starting the seventeenth of this month.
